Former Toronto mayor Rob Ford — who became an infamous figure for his highly publicized crack scandal while in office — died Tuesday shortly after ending chemo treatment for his terminal cancer.
Ford was diagnosed with pleomorphic liposarcoma in 2014 after a tumor was discovered in his abdomen. He underwent surgeries and multiple rounds of chemotherapy, but the cancer proved too strong for treatment.

Ford was caught on video smoking crack on multiple occasions during his term in office. He admitted to crack use but denied it was an addiction.
He underwent a brief stint in rehab before returning to his post, but failed to win re-election once his term expired.
Despite his notoriety, Ford gathered a strange following as an eccentric and likable celebrity after revelations about his drug use. Many expressed admiration for his no nonsense and candid demeanor about governing Toronto and were willing to excuse his substance abuse in full.
But his detractors ultimately prevailed in making sure Ford did not obtain a second term in office.
The news of Ford’s passing proves a tragic end to a tragic figure in public life, who hopefully is released from the demons he appeared to carry.
