Feminist celebrity Lena Dunham agrees with students at Oberlin, her alma mater, who protested the dining hall sushi as an example of racist cultural appropriation…they promptly opted for spaghetti without any irony.
“There are now big conversations at Oberlin, where I went to college, about cultural appropriation and whether the dining hall sushi and banh mi disrespect certain cuisines,” Dunham said in a recent interview with Food & Wine magazine.

Oberlin students made headlines last year when they complained about the dining hall cuisine, including insufficiently “authentic” ethnic dishes such as sushi, which were deemed “appropriative” and “disrespectful.”
In fact, one student wrote in The Oberlin Review: “This uninformed representation of cultural dishes has been noted by a multitude of students, many of who have expressed concern over the gross manipulation of traditional recipes.”
One can’t help but wonder if those that cry foul actually even understand the proper meaning of the word “appropriation”…which is problematic for a supposed college level vocabulary…
