It’s considered a dry run dress rehearsal leading up to the Oscars. It’s less formal, it’s more playful, but you’re a fool if you don’t think anybody in the room cares about winning. The Golden Globes have been more accurate than the weatherman, with few notable exceptions, in predicting who the Academy will smile upon a month from now.
So you had better believe there were some white knuckled movie stars in the room…whether it was out of fear of being cruelly skewered by host Ricky Gervais or because they were sweating out their nomination is open for debate.
But the night was a largely predictable affair that saw few surprises and gave some very heavy-handed hints as to who will be taking home Oscar gold in short order.

It also proved to be a bit of a rowdy gathering, as the television censors had to repeatedly filter the broadcast.
To no one’s surprise Ricky Gervais delivered his expected zingers to a number of celebrities, pulling no punches against Sean Penn, Caitlyn Jenner, and even having a spirited exchange with Mel Gibson on stage.
But the evening ultimately belonged to the actual award winners, the Sylvester Stallones, and Leonardo DiCaprios of the world, who are now favored to take home Academy Awards to match their Golden Globes as Best Supporting and Best Actor accordingly.
Films such as “The Revenant” and “The Martian” took all the glory last night, sweeping through the award categories like a Black Friday shopper. An actress won something too, Brie Larson, for her role in a movie that largely no one saw, called simply “Room”. We’re sure it’s good, and will be mindful to catch it on cable at some point in the future.
But back to the heavyweights, the true stars of the screen as well as any award show, and it was clear that the standing ovation Leo received was as much a toast from friends as it was any affirmation that he was worthy of an award for putting up with that bear in “The Revenant”.
Still, it will be fascinating to see if the Golden Globes are quite the Oscar Nostradamus everyone seems to think they are.
