Count gay icon and original Mr. Sulu George Takei as an unlikely critic of turning his beloved ‘Star Trek’ character into an LGBT character…
Takei even personally called the screenwriters of the forthcoming ‘Star Trek Beyond’ to tell them they were indeed going where no Trekkie character had gone before…and far “Beyond” the intentionality and vision of creator Gene Roddenberry.
Takei has long been an outspoken gay rights activist, as an out of the closet gay man himself, he has been a loud social media advocate of the gay political agenda…but even he as a respectful purist of the source material isn’t amused by applying some 21st Century social engineering into the character universe of Star Trek.

Takei respectfully feels the source work just isn’t open for defiling or reinterpreting.
Especially ironic given the that the new movie’s director Justin Lin and co-writer Simon Pegg implemented the gay story line as a supposed tribute to George Takei…apparently never once stopping to listen to why he didn’t see this as a flattering tribute…
Takei tried to explain his misgivings in vain. ‘I told him, ‘Be imaginative and create a character who has a history of being gay, rather than Sulu, who had been straight all this time, suddenly being revealed as being closeted.’
But Hollywood didn’t listen, and so now a supposed “tribute” comes across as a bit of an insult, both to the source material and to the actor in who’s name it was supposed to give homage…
