Ryan Gosling Landed the Role in The Notebook Because Nobody Wanted It

You may always remember Ryan Gosling as Noah Calhoun in The Notebook. The role rocketed him from a small time actor in screen and tv to a worldwide heartthrob. The success of the movie even launched a series of copycat dramas written by Rom-Drama novelist Nicholas Sparks, trying to capitalize on the success that the original movie adaptation had found.

But according to Sparks in an interview with IMDB Asks, Gosling got the role because nobody else wanted it. The young actor didn’t have tough competition when it came to landing the role, which the author elaborated on further.

According to Sparks:

“It was really interesting because a lot of the actors said, ‘Well, what’s Noah’s arc?’”

“It’s a guy who falls in love and then he just kinda does nothing, and then waits for her to show up and then he’s there and he’s still in love and then at the end of the film, well, he’s still in love”.

Sparks said that Ryan Gosling “came in and he really brought that story to life.”

Spark’s novels-turned-to-films don’t usually please the movie audiences to the degree that this one did, but this story of a dementia-stricken love affair would be such a box office triumph that it turned Gosling into one of Hollywood’s leading men. The rest, as you know, is history.
