Bowie took on soul music with the fabulous “Young Americans” track off of the 1975 album of the same name. Featuring memorable saxophone playing by David Sanborn and a samba-like beat. The tune offered up a new direction for Bowie, as he transitioned from Ziggy Stardust to the Thin White Duke.

4. Heroes (1977)

Bowie’s “Heroes” is one of his most inspirational songs. It was considered a haunting, exhilarating and edifying work of genius in its time, and like a fine wine has only continued to get better.

Co-written by Bowie and Brian Eno, the track’s title was inspired by a song called “Hero” by the experimental German band Neu!

3. “Moonage Daydream” (1972)

This track has proven to be one of the most enduring songs on the album — and of his career. “Moonage Daydream” features some of the most jaw-dropping guitar work of Mick Ronson’s career. It remains one of the fan favorites of Bowie’s illustrious Ziggy Stardust era.

2. Changes (1971)

Bowie has often been referred to as a chameleon, and he lays that out himself on one of his best-known hits “Changes”. Musically, “Changes” is a beautiful tune that features piano playing by Rick Wakeman of the band Yes’. In 2006, he sang it with Alicia Keys at the Hammerstein Ballroom for a charity show. It was to be his last public performance.

1. Space Oddity (1969)

The Space Oddity was perhaps his greatest song. It’s so impressive to think that Bowie was only 22 years old when this was released.

He teamed up with Elton John producer Gus Dudgeon to create “Space Oddity,” a song he’d been fiddling with all year. The label rushed it out to coincide with the launch of the Apollo 11 moon landing, and the BBC played the song during the coverage of the event.

He’s had countless hits over the years, but “Space Oddity” remains one of his most famous songs.

David Bowie was without a doubt one of the most influential musicians that pop has ever seen. He created a series of landmark albums over the last six decades. And his music is destined to live on.

David Bowie’s last release, Lazarus, was ‘parting gift’ for fans in the carefully planned final act of Bowie’s great career and life. His producer has confirmed that the album was a carefully-orchestrated farewell to his fans.
