It’s a story that will give some people warm and fuzzy feelings, and others a cynical view that Olympic medals have turned into participation trophies, but one thing this incredible turn of events has not done, is go unnoticed.
And for one brief harmonious moment, Nikki Hamblin, the New Zealand athlete who captured the essence of the Olympic spirit in a single act of selfless kindness, has been rewarded for her amazing sense of sportsmanship.

Hamblin heroically refused to finish her own race without helping a fellow athlete, American sprinter Abbey D’Agostino, who fell in cramped up agony mid-race.
Hamblin helped carry her maimed competitor across the finish line showing a courageous sense of sportsmanship and good will…and a very lousy killer instinct and sense of focus.
Her efforts garnered recognition from the Olympic Committee, who set out to reward her gesture, handing her the Pierre de Coubertin medal…an award that sounds more like a bottle of sparkling water than as recognition for good will toward your fellow athletes…
Named after the founder of the International Olympic Committee, the award is reserved for athletes, volunteers or officials who have demonstrated the “Olympic spirit”…meaning much like the Special Olympics, it’s in essence a participation trophy…
But from a PR perspective this will have a lasting impact as a photo op that will resonate with greater coverage and endure as a lasting Olympic legacy longer than most medals ever could or do…me thinks endorsements are just a matter of time…
