Hope Solo has just been benched by Team USA soccer for SIX MONTHS after her embarrassing antics in the aftermath of the U.S. Women’s Soccer loss to to Sweden during the Rio Olympics. Her ungracious lack of sportsmanship in her post game remarks caused quite a stir when Solo stated that the Swedish team was a “bunch of cowards”.
Teammates were quick to distance themselves from the chilly remarks of their mouthy goalie.
And not surprisingly, a punishment from the National Team was forthcoming. U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati announced the suspension Wednesday afternoon — saying the comments were “unacceptable and do not meet the standards of conduct we require from our National Team players.”
What raised a few eyebrows, however, is that Gulati insinuated there was some retroactive punishment occurring to Solo for past antics that went undisciplined.
“Taking into consideration the past incidents involving Hope, as well as the private conversations we’ve had requiring her to conduct herself in a manner befitting a U.S. National Team member, U.S. Soccer determined this is the appropriate disciplinary action,” Gulati said.
We can only assume this past incident included a drunken joyride in Team USA’s van without permission, an episode that landed her a 30 day suspension.
After the suspension was announced, Solo released the following statement on Instagram…and it was hardly a mea culpa…
